Caravan Battery
Choosing the right caravan battery for your caravan, camper or motorhome can be quite difficult if you don't know what you are looking for. We offer a wide range of batteries to suit all applications.
To decide which type of battery is best for you depends on a number of different considerations:
- Standard wet lead acid battery - generally the cheapest but generally also have the shorter life.
- Sealed wet leisure battery - needs no maintenance and will hold its charge longer.
- AGM and Gel leisure battery - are able to cope with more charge/discharge cycles and have low self drain properties. The AGM type also has the advantage of being able to resist vibration very well.
Leisure batteries differ from car batteries as car batteries are desgned to give out a large amount of power in a short space of time (starting the car). A leisure battery on the other hand, is designed to store power and release it over a much longer period of time.
Prolonging the Life of your Battery
- Switch off all appliances that aren't being used
- Avoid using appliances that will put a high drain on the battery such as TV's
- Keep your battery regularly topped up
- Use the appropriate battery charger

30 years ago, batteries lost water at a high rate and motorists were advised to check the acid level as one of their weekly checks. Improvements using calcium as a hardening agent in grids in place of antimony have caused less contamination of the acid and much reduced water loss. This makes the battery maintenance-free so no water needs to be added during its life under normal operating conditions. During the same period, battery life has doubled from 2 years to 4-5 years. Always refer to the information contained in the handbook or brochure supplied with the vehicle or equipment. (copyright Lucas Batteries)
